Crane at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - Decembet 12, 2024
Posted: Thursday December 12, 2024 9:55am ET by WDWMAGIC Staff

A large crane is now in position behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Frontierland at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom.

The crane, which is now clearly visible from certain vantage points around Frontierland, will be used for tasks like dismantling and replacing track sections, as well as other work requiring a large reach. The scale of the crane suggests that substantial updates are planned for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which is set to close for refurbishment on January 6, 2025, and reopen sometime in 2026.

What to Expect During the Refurbishment

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad's refurbishment will be its most extensive since a four-month update in 2012. Permits filed for the project indicate work on the ride system, infrastructure, and electrical systems.

Disney has promised "a little bit of new magic" when the attraction reopens, but the exact details of what will change remain under wraps. Previous updates to Big Thunder at Disneyland included enhanced ride systems, updated vehicles, and refreshed theming, so it's possible Magic Kingdom's version could receive similar upgrades.

Stay tuned for more updates as the project unfolds.

Wow, with Tiana being so unreliable and then Big Thunder going offline for maintenance, this is really going to hurt MK.

The fir or spruce working over at Lakeside Lodge?

I hope they fix up that geyser area...it doesn't look very good right now.

Looks like it's fully assembled. The assembly crane is still there though. It didn't look like they had all of the counterweights attached yet though.

Twins. It was a very strange day at the maternity ward.

Any relation to Frasier Crane?

Blobbles6 hours ago

His tragic backstory is that riverboats killed his father, so he must take revenge on the rivers of America. Real tragic stuff.

Bob crane. He's a real hero.

Does the crane have a name? He must dislike sight lines very much. And I think he’ll be around for a long time with cars and villains.

I don't think that crane is geographically and temporally themed appropriately.

Sightlines have nothing to do with it.

It's folded in half in its "lowered" position for safety regarding wind. It will only be extended when needed

Unbanshee11 hours ago

Here's a look at the same style of crane. Not fully extended, but it might give you a better idea of reach

Ohhhh that makes much more sense now. I wonder how high it can get when fully extended. No doubt it will be able to reach the entire BTM site.
