A new Notice of Commencement has been filed for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, marking another step in the extensive refurbishment project scheduled to begin in early 2025.

The notice lists Coastal Steel Inc. as the contractor, with the work described as "General Construction." The document carries an expiration date of March 13, 2026, reinforcing the expectation that the major overhaul could stretch well into the spring of 2026.

This latest filing aligns with a previous permit issued to DPR Construction, which also carries an expiration date of March 13, 2026. DPR Construction is known for handling complex structural projects, indicating that the timeline for refurbishment phases may be coordinated between Disney's major contractors.

Interestingly, a prior permit involving Coastal Steel Inc. had a much earlier expiration date of August 8, 2025. The new March 2026 date extends the expected timeline for Coastal Steel's involvement, reinforcing the notion that the project may be more extensive than initially anticipated.

Project Timeline at a Glance

  • Closure Date: January 6, 2025
  • Previous Coastal Steel Permit Expiration: August 8, 2025
  • Current Coastal Steel Notice Expiration: March 13, 2026
  • DPR Construction Permit Expiration: March 13, 2026
  • Expected Reopening: 2026 (likely Spring or later)

This refurbishment is shaping up to be the most comprehensive update to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad since it opened.

Disney has yet to release details on what "a little bit of new magic" entails, but the multitude of permits and extended timelines suggest substantial work ahead.

Making a new thread for this rumor. EDIT: Here it is!

The timing

TrainsOfDisney12 hours ago

Yes, all other versions are side by side. I believe all other versions have on board audio as well. The one in Anaheim is my favorite. I was so glad they restored the blue light tunnel again!

That rumor makes sense because I believe tomorrow and is getting a big polish after all th stuff already announced is completed. This is 4+ years from now. Unless they think that can get BTM and Space done before Villains is ready. I don't think they want major rides down with villains just opening.

Is it not side-by-side in other parks? Also, I find it fairly uncomfortable even as a 150-lb man.

Losing the two tracks on Space Mountain would be another insult to the MK. The big wigs in Burbank couldn’t care less about MK.

But the single wide vehicle is what makes it unique, lose that and you lose a lot. Especially with the most recent two coasters built being two wide, indoor coasters.

Oh I know the last time I went on it was at the Christmas party and I spent the whole ride terrified I was going to lose my phone

James Alucobond13 hours ago

I mean whether or not it'll switch to single track with a double-wide vehicle. That would honestly go a long way toward me bothering with it again. The current vehicles always have me grasping at my pocket contents out of concern that they'll slide into the abyss.

Space is way past its lifespan - they have to close it or rebuild it soon.

Are you referring exclusively to the timing or the suggested updates as well?

peter1143514 hours ago

It will happen eventually. But I don’t believe it’s happening in 2026

JoeCamel14 hours ago

If not then when? This is 10+ years past due so when are they going to bite the bullet?

peter1143514 hours ago

I don’t believe this is happening
