In a newly released Q&A, legendary former Walt Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde offers insights into his storied career and shares revealing thoughts on the challenges and fears he faced while leading the groundbreaking Avatar project at Walt Disney World.

Asked about his fondest memories of working in Pandora The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom, Joe said, "Pandora was another thing altogether. I was terrified of this project when it began, and certain that it would be the disastrous end of my career. It's a matter of public record that I wrote multiple memos to the company advising them not to acquire the property because it was so impossible to build out of real material in the real world. Then, of course, we had to do it. It ended up being one of my favorite projects."

Speaking of the audio-animatronic shamen figure in River Journey, Joe reveals that its capabilities led the team to redevelop the entire script. "We realized that the robotic shaman figure was capable of a deeper and more convincing psychological performance than we had realized. That led us to redevelop the entire script to take advantage of the remarkable performance quality of this figure."

Joe also discusses WDI's achievement in bringing Avatar Flight of Passage to life: "We realized that Avatar Flight of Passage was going to be a more emotional experience than we had imagined and that we might have something here that was a real game changer, far above the technical achievement of getting it done—something like a real work of art."

Finally, Joe touches upon how he wants his time at Disney Imagineering to be remembered. Notably, at a time when every new Disney theme park attraction is tied to an existing Disney IP, Joe says, "There's just not a lot of classic IP in my portfolio. If I have a legacy, I suppose it is that… to leave a body of work that shows just how much more and how much else Imagineers are capable of."

You can read the entire Q&A with Joe Rohde at the Disney Corporate website. Joe will be honored at the Disney Legends Award Ceremony on Sunday, August 11, 2024.

I feel like that's the best they could have done with what was given. They were stuck with a building only meant for one thing and had to theme it to a property that couldn't be more different from that original thing. Like it sucks but it was either sign off in this or it doesn't get completed at all.

I hear they're turning to recent events in an effort to make the France pavilion more realistic in a budget-minded way. They'll be installing a sign and door for an entrance to a rooftop bar that they're not going to actually build. The plan is to have a cast member at ground level turning everyone away who enquirers about going there, informing them it's at capacity. 😏 💩

The budgets weren’t cut. Realizing you can’t afford what you want isn’t a budget cut. A lot of also just pathetic reactionary nonsense.

I had some minor disagreements with how he designed Animal Kingdom but it was more of....multiple ways, all valid, to create theme parks. Example: World Showcase is sort of an idyllic version of the host countries, whereas Animal Kingdom is more realistic........both have their merits and it actually took me TRAVELING to places similar to what's in Animal Kingdom to appreciate them more.

Could not agree more. I have met him several times. Once I met him getting coffee in the concierge lounge at AKL. We were there for advanced opening of Pandora for AP holders. He must have talked to us for 20 to 30 minutes. Could not have been more honest and open of a gentleman. No one is perfect, but he is not an Imagineer to dump on.

It would be nice if it was the length of pirates - but most Disney attractions are in the 4-5 minute mark these days.

As soon as you think it's starting to get to something actually happening, the ride is over. It would be something different if Disney didn't have a history of long, well done water rides in its portfolio with a lot more that happens during the ride.

I've heard that they generally enjoyed it, but that could be a small sample.

Of all the people to criticize at Disney… Joe is not the person!!! He’s one of a few that legit earns the Legend status.

JoeCamelAug 07, 2024

Maybe not with the Legends.......

CompedAug 07, 2024

Disney should start up Dine with a Disney Legend again... No idea why they haven't. Used to be stupidly popular.

And here I was, afraid we'd miss out on your valuable insights in this thread...

I was able to attend a special talk Joe gave at Tiffins back in 2018 in association with the park's 20th anniversary and even luckier to sit at his table. He was nicer and even more interesting than you could hope he'd be. He was so generous with his time and made sure every single person there was able to ask him a question if they wanted to (even about the Yeti, which I'm sure he gets tired of hearing about) and get a photo with him. Amazing storyteller. Will forever be in my top few Disney experiences ever. Sometimes I question these Legends appointments but not this one!! So well deserved!!
