As someone who goes to theaters every week I see original movies all the time that never find a mass audience which is a shame… I am talking more then just Disney… very rarely do any completely original films break out

Thankfully, there is still Muppets' Haunted Mansion which is thoroughly enjoyable.

Yeah, Tomorrowland took a weird turn that didn’t do it for me.

I think if they gave us good original movies people would flock to them. Unfortunately the last several years have been mostly duds, for me Tomorrowland was my turning point, I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to a movie as much as that and then the second half was just horrible, a few years later I allowed myself to get very excited for a Wrinkle in Time only to leave the theater disappointed again. Not long after that the world came to a grinding halt so my hesitancy didn’t change but I let myself get excited for Haunted Mansion this year only to leave feeling it was ok but not great. It’s been a long time since Disneys came up with an original movie (that wasn’t animated) that I loved.

It's sad but people really don't seem that interested in new anymore. Just about anything that isn't based on an existing IP flops spectacularly at the theaters so we see less and less attempts at something new. That same hesitation creeps over into the theme parks side as well where Disney hasn't built a non-IP attraction since around Everest. Universal seems to at least have a couple coming with EU (roller coaster and carousel I believe) but they have something like one original ride that isn't based on IP at the two existing parks.

I don't think Universal actually intended it to be out for very long. It was for Halloween and was marketed as such. It had a presence at HHN even if it was just a preview and props. Very old school Disneyland.

The Creator reminded me a lot of Rogue One. Same director.

I don't disagree with any of that. Disney made some odd decisions all around for Haunted Mansion, and it flopped. The problem is that Haunted Mansion wasn't just a one-off flop in a string of successes. It was instead Disney's sixth flop in a row in a 2023 string of what is now nine flops and counting. (Next up to try to break that flop chain, The Marvels...) As for Freddy's, which many of us had never heard of until a week ago, I can't imagine it will have staying power at the box office. It's now November 1st, Halloween is over, and we're heading quickly into a slate of mega-budget family films to take us through Thanksgiving and Christmas. I would imagine Freddy's has a very steep drop off at the box office from here and is likely gone from theaters three weeks from now. A flash in the pan, if you will. And yet, Freddy's doesn't need to have legs at the box office. With its $25 Million budget and modest marketing it broke even after its second day and has already made a tidy profit after just five days; Freddy's is now at $22 Million profit and counting, and Haunted Mansion was a $167 Million loss.

I think there could be potential with Tower of Terror. It really depends on if they are just doing something to be basically a commercial for the ride or if they don't play it safe and do something unique

When will people start asking for completely original ideas again…RIP The Creator

PhroobarNov 01, 2023

Too bad we never got the Del Toro version but he doesn't need Disney for a haunted house movie.

Basil of Baker StreetNov 01, 2023

This was always my take as well. Who was asking for another HM movie? Now we have 2 bad HM movies. Will be the same story with Tower of Terror assuming it's still green lit when we come out of the strikes.

No one has been asking for a Haunted Mansion movie but a lot of people have been waiting for a real Five Nights at Freddy's movie. Universal marketed it better.
