At today's Walt Disney Company shareholder meeting, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Disney is developing a live-action reimagining of Moana.

No details yet on a release date, and Dwayne Johnson, the voice of Maui, said the process is still in its early stages.

Originally released as a 2016 Disney animated feature, the hit movie inspired a new Journey of Water attraction opening later this year at EPCOT.

“I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen,” said Johnson, who plans to return to the fictional world to set sail with Moana. “This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui—inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia—is one that runs very deep for me. I want to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this special endeavor, because there is no better world for us to honor the story of our people, our passion, and our purpose than through the realm of music and dance, which is at the core of who we are as Polynesian people.”

Cravalho, a Native Hawaiian actor who helped shape the protagonist in the original film, said Moana’s reach is sweeping. “She has had such a profound impact on how we think of Disney princesses,” Cravalho explained. “Moana’s strength and perseverance are inspiring—to audiences around the world, to me, and to everyone who helped bring her to life. I’m looking forward to sharing her story in a whole new way.”

Sean Bailey, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production (Disney Live Action), said the film will join a successful lineup of live-action adaptations that includes Beauty and the Beast (2017), Aladdin (2019), and the highly anticipated The Little Mermaid, opening in theaters May 26. “It’s still early,” Bailey said, “but the idea of working with these fantastic partners to tell such a meaningful story on a live-action canvas, particularly as we celebrate 100 years of storytelling at Disney, is thrilling.”

Disney has found their Moana for the live-action film: "Catherine Laga‘aia will be voyaging to Motunui and beyond as the adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people in Disney’s upcoming live-action Moana. “I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites,” said the 17-year-old Sydney, Australia, native. “My grandfather comes from Fa‘aala, Palauli, in Savai‘i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of ‘Upolu in Samoa. I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.” The cast also includes Auckland, New Zealander John Tui as Moana’s no-nonsense father, Chief Tui; Samoan-New Zealand actress Frankie Adams portrays Moana’s playful and strong-willed mother, Sina; and Rena Owen, who hails from Bay of Islands, NZ, was cast as the revered Gramma Tala. Previously announced, Dwayne Johnson, who voiced larger-than-life demigod Maui in the 2016 animated version of the film, will reprise his role." Yeah....that ain't it.

The guy literally doesn't have to work again if he doesn't want to. I don't think he is all that worried about his career, especially since he has another movie coming out later this year where he was paid $50M.

Ghost93Feb 09, 2024

I believe the Rock is pushing the live action Moana more than Disney since he's afraid of the state of his career post Black Adam flopping.

Did he address how saying it will be released on thanksgiving is the biggest panic move…like…ever? Can’t wait who they found though…bet she’s cheap and locked into a 3 picture deal 💰

THR is reporting Dwayne Johnson will return as Maui. As @MisterPenguin posted earlier, Thomas Kail will direct. "Thomas Kail, the Tony Award-winning director of Broadway’s Hamilton, has been tapped to direct Disney’s live-action take on the studio’s 2016 animated musical sensation Moana. Disney announced the remake earlier this spring and has secured Dwayne Johnson to return to the role of Maui, the grandiose demigod of the wind and sea. Johnson is producing via his Seven Bucks Productions along with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Beau Flynn is also producing via Flynn Picture Co. Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for the original movie, penned the remake, along with Dana Ledoux Miller." https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/moana-live-action-remake-director-thomas-kail-1235502170/

When I first heard the song I dislike it, but seeing Scuttlebutt performed in the movie… it sort of works…it’s catchy and it is suppose to seem kind of awful in an awkafina seagull kind of way

LittleBufordMay 30, 2023

The “live-action” Scuttle is actually a gannet, but I don’t think that changes your point.

Disney IrishMay 30, 2023

Her voice is actually perfect for a seagull, so it works for me.
