The Walt Disney Company Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger announced today that Moana 2, Disney Animation’s all-new feature-length sequel to 2016's Oscar-nominated film, will be released in theaters on November 27, 2024.

"Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise," said Iger. "And we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November."

Walt Disney Animation Studios' animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.

After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

Directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina, Moana 2 opens in theaters on November 27, 2024.

Which one? There seems to be a few movie "experts" on here.

Or folding them into each other, as the acclaimed movie expert here kept advocating for last year. ;)

Not that it was ever really at risk. But yes, no one is folding the number one and number three studio last year (Pixar / WDAS).

Forgive me for this, but Walt Disney Animation Studios is saved!🤩

As of today, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ #Moana2 has officially hit $1 billion worldwide. The third Disney film of 2024 to hit a billion this year (after Pixar’s #InsideOut2 & Marvel Studios’ #DeadpoolAndWolverine). That means the top 3 global earners of 2024 are not only billion dollar hits, but Disney movies too. And also, #Moana2 making this much means 2 things: 1. That Disney might have some faith in diverse movies at the box office (ones that are female-led & starring folks of color), since this one’s lead character was voiced by a BI-WOC and one of its three directors and two writers who worked on this movie was a woman (Dana Ledoux Miller), especially in the wake of past and recent events have put Pixar’s next original stories on the edge. And 2. That the possibilities are now open for any Disney+ series in development to maybe go into production as a movie. The only question is which one is going to be next in the pipeline? #TheMandalorianAndGroguAStarWarsStory and #Bluey’s movie are already in post-production and pre-production for theatrical releases in 2026 and 2027. Marvel Studios’ #ArmorWars is also still being written for theatrical release after The Multiverse Saga ends (at least for now). So, what’s next? It won’t be #Tiana. But what could be next? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Just pointing out your statement is a double negative so what you’re telling everyone is Disney should be making movies for critics.

That’s what always happens here. I do recall a good half your posts were financial or Wicked v Moana related on this thread prior to opening. It is definitely showing the franchise is stronger than a few others were thinking it was. I won’t die in a hill it’s an amazing movie. I liked it more than most, seemingly. Wicked was great!

Yeah, anybody who tries to make excuses like "It's for kids/fans" or "It's not for critics" if it's in regards to the actual artistic execution of the work comes off to me as an apologist for a lack of effort. We saw this last year with apologists for Wish and that's just keeping it to WDFAS work. Really I think it's telling that this thread has fallen apart into a discussion of how well the movie is doing financially and not whether it's any good as an actual film. I don't think Disney should be rewarded for what seems to be subpar work just because it has a familiar brand name on it (and that is important; if this wasn't banking on goodwill for the previous film it could have done about as well as Wish and Strange World did), but that's become their business model.

They aim for both. Sometimes only one is engaged, or even none -- hopefully both.

Disney shouldn’t not be making movies for Critics. It’s better when they make movies for their audience.

Mmm hmm.
