In a memo to Disney Cast Members earlier this week, Disney CEO Bob Chapek has made his intentions clear that Disney will follow Facebook and others into the metaverse.
Chapek said that he believes the metaverse is "the next great storytelling frontier and the perfect place to pursue our strategic pillars of Storytelling Excellence, Innovation, and Audience Focus."
Underlining his belief in the new technology, he has created a new role of Senior Vice President, Next Generation Storytelling and Consumer Experiences - to be filled by Mike White, who currently leads Consumer Experiences and Platforms in Disney's Media and Entertainment Distribution group.
Underlining the importance to the future of the parks, Mike will report to Disney, Parks and Experiences head Josh D'Amaro, and Kareem Daniel, Chairman of Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution. Mike will be assembling a team from across the company, including senior figures in storytelling, technology, and strategy.
The metaverse is thought by some to be the future of the internet, where participants use a headset to enter a virtual world. Supporters of the idea expect the virtual world to be used for all aspects of daily life, including work, play, and even vacations.
