One of the most talked-about additions to this year’s EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays is the 8-foot-tall gingerbread version of Spaceship Earth.

Located in CommuniCore Hall, the gingerbread structure mirrors the detail of EPCOT’s iconic geodesic sphere. Nearly 1,000 individually cut gingerbread triangles were carefully assembled to replicate the look of the original. The numbers behind it are impressive: 240 pounds of honey dough, 55 pounds of dark chocolate, and 100 pounds of royal icing, all coming together to create the giant edible display. For an extra challenge, there are 11 hidden Mickeys tucked into the design, representing the World Showcase countries.

The gingerbread Spaceship Earth lights up and is synchronized using music from the first Disneyland holiday soundtrack from 1957 to a track called "Silver Trees." the three-minute show takes place every 30 minutes. I would assume at this point, if it is not up by now, it is not coming. Yes the Gingerbread Spaceship Earth is nice...but I agree fall below the mark. Why is this "Flex Space" still sterile? As the center for celebrations at EPCOT this space should be spectacular...Think of all of the things they don't do anymore... Lights Of Winter etc...and this is the best they can come up with? Seriously if they would like to contact me for ideas I would love to work on this project. They need to budget this properly and start making it the "Celebration Center" it was supposed to be...not a cafeteria with some decorations...

Alright, time to start with the posts about how maybe for Festival of the Arts CommuniCore Hall will finally not be a joke. Then we'll start acting like it'll happen for Flower and Garden. Then inexplicably people will continue to hold out hope for the next Food and Wine. On and on. And it'll never actually happen.

I agree it could be much better. BUT... almost all the gingerbread houses bigger than 2 feet tall are just gingerbread glued to wood or cardboard. Let me know when they're made of nothing but gingerbread, and I'll be impressed. As for the whole ambience of the room: Still disappointingly sterile. Have they not heard of wall decorations? Maybe more is to come. Or maybe it'll be like other holiday displays in which the budget allows them to add more year over year (like LwtL Christmas lights).

There's fewer Christmas trees in the 'glittering grove' than there are on display at your local Home Depot. Thoroughly unimpressive.

I think the gingerbread Spaceship Earth looks great. Problem is that it's still floating in the middle of a mostly empty convention hall with a few decals. This space needs to have a lot more content for every single festival to even approach a state that doesn't feel utterly wasteful and pointless.

I'm likely to face criticism for saying this, but I believe the artisans behind the Spaceship Earth gingerbread display missed the mark. While it's undoubtedly an impressive feat, I don't think it captures the true essence of the holiday season. Those same geodesic tiles could easily be replicated using cardboard and achieve a similar visual impact. The fact that it's made of gingerbread is "on-point" but for me, that's only half the equation. The other half is about capturing the warm, inviting spirit of the holiday season and embracing the whimsy and charm of gingerbread baking during the holidays. The beacons of light could have been designed using traditional accents like spice drops or peppermint candies, which I think would have enhanced the overall experience. Don't get me wrong; it's a skillfully crafted piece. However, for me, it falls short of truly feeling festive.

Remember to avoid a quarter mile around Communicor Hall during Painful! occurrences unless you enjoy off key squalls of a cat being electrocuted. Unfortunately our dinner plans are in Epcot today.
