Star War’s Galaxy’s Edge will open with no less than five food and beverage locations, and the main restaurant is Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo - found right in the heart of Black Spire Outpost.
As the story goes, Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo is a Black Spire Outpost stop-off for traveling food shuttles, and the current resident chef is Chef Strono Tuggs. His Sienar-Chall Utilipede-Transport ship has been modified to be his mobile kitchen and restaurant. His planet-hopping travels allow him to prepare fare with unusual flavors that delight customers.
Like everything on Batuu, the exterior has very little signage - but you’ll find Docking Bay 7 just across from the Millenium Falcon and Smugglers Run. The circular entrance has some electronic signs and an abbreviated menu board - the only hint that a restaurant is inside.
The exterior is beautifully crafted - full of detail and a masterclass of aging and distressing.
To the left of the main entrance is a small outdoor seating area surrounded by crumbling walls of the old marketplace. A lack of shade means this will be a place to be in the winter, but for the summer you will be advised to head inside.
Stepping inside you are immediately struck with how much detail there is - everywhere you look there is something to see, with not an inch of un-themed space to be seen. Sound and lighting effects all add to the immersion into the environment.
Once you take in the wonderful art design though, it hits you that this place is not very big. For a land that is so large and expected to be so busy, the main quick service eatery is just too small. During our visit, every seats was taken, there was a queue out of the door.
The restaurant follows the typical Disney quick service layout. You pass through a small holding area and head towards the registers to place your order. There are only 3 registers, and a Cast Member was on-hand to distribute guests to a specific register.
Once the order it taken, you step forward to the pickup counter where your order magically arrives by conveyor belt before being presented to you by the Cast Member.
Now if you haven’t seen any of the food here before, this is where you might get a very pleasant surprise. The food looks nothing like a quick service offering, and more like what you would get in one of Disney’s table service restaurants. It is beautifully presented on reusable plates, along with stainless steel silverware. The only problem, you have to carry it to your seat, as there is no delivery to your table like there is at Be Our Guest in the Magic Kingdom.
This is the most expensive item on the Docking Bay 7 menu, the $19 Braised Shaak Roast - Beef Pot Roast, Cavatelli Pasta, Wilted Kale, Mushrooms.
Not only did it look great, but it really delivered on the all important taste. This is a table service quality item, and is something that we would actually go back for. A taste of the dish immediately tells you that Disney’s Hollywood Studios finally has a quick service location worth your time and money.
Next we tried the $16 Fried Endorian Tip-Yip, which is Fried Chicken, Roasted Vegetable Potato Mash, Herb Gravy. It didn’t match the Pot Roast for flavor and interest, but it was a well prepared dish that is far above what you would typically expect with quick service chicken.
The desserts, both priced around $7 are equally well presented and conceived.
The Batuu-bon is Chocolate Cake, White-Chocolate Mousse, Coffee Custard and the Oi-Oi Puff is Raspberry Crème Puff and Passion Fruit Mousse.
Both desserts are good, very light, and sized for one.
The menu also includes a small selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic specialty drinks. Kids offerings are thankfully downsized versions of the main items, so no frozen hot dogs and fries to be seen.
Overall, Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo easily becomes the best quick service location at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and is likely a tie with Satu'li Canteen in Pandora The World of Avatar for the honor of being Walt Disney World’s best. It is clear that Disney is trying harder than ever with its quick service options, and if you like Satu'li Canteen, you will likely be very pleased with Docking Bay 7.
Unfortunately, just like Oga’s Cantina, Docking Bay 7 is far too small for the number of guests who are going to want to eat there. Expect waits outside to get in, and problems securing a seat once inside. It would be advisable to try to eat at off peak dining hours.
Despite its shortcoming with capacity, Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo is definitely worth a try. The quality of the food on its own makes it a great option, but combined with the interesting decor and environment, there is no question that the restaurant should be one of your dining stops on your visit to Batuu.
Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo is open from park opening to park close, and includes a breakfast service for early arrivals. View the entire Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo menu.
