The first batch of 12 points of lights have been installed on the exterior of Spaceship Earth as part of the 'Beacon of Magic' lighting show coming to EPCOT later in 2021.
Debuting as part of Disney World's 50th anniversary celebration on October 1 2021, the new lighting at Spaceship Earth is a permanent addition and will live on beyond the 18 month 50th celebration event.
The fixtures, mounted between the triangular exterior panels of Spaceship Earth, appear to be high-output LED's with a silver enclosure to match the alucobond finish. The central main light that will project light outward is surrounded by smaller lights that will shine onto the surface of Spaceship Earth. Each of the lights is attached with a bracket to the structure, and also secured with a cable tether for additional security.
From the ground they are barely visible, although the first twelve are fairly high on the structure, and it remains to be seen how they will appear when much closer to the guests. The lights are not flush with the exterior, and do protrude outward, but some may like the appearance as they close the gaps between the triangular panels.
Concept art of the lighting shows what we can expect when the effect goes live later this year. According to Imagineer Zach Riddley, "Her classic look will be maintained and accentuated through new colors and intensity in programmed expressions that extend into the new main entrance fountain and the entire World Celebration area."
