The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) and AECOM have today published the 2023 Theme Index: Global Attractions Attendance Report.

This industry report provides a comprehensive guide to theme park attendance worldwide, offering year-on-year estimates of attendance changes. As Disney and most other large theme parks do not provide official attendance figures, this report represents the only published estimate of global theme park attendance.

Key Observations

Disney Parks

In 2023, Disney parks continued to dominate the global theme park landscape, showing modest but consistent gains across most locations. The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World remains the most visited theme park in the world, with a 3.4% increase in attendance, reaching 17.7 million visitors. Disneyland Park in Anaheim also saw a slight increase of 2.2%, bringing its total to 17.25 million visitors. Shanghai Disneyland experienced a dramatic rebound with a 164.2% increase in attendance, driven by the easing of pandemic restrictions in China and the opening of the new Zootopia-themed area.

EPCOT at Walt Disney World stood out with a significant 19.8% increase in attendance, reaching nearly 12 million visitors. This growth can be attributed to the park's new additions, including Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind, refreshed fireworks shows, and Journey of Water Inspired by Moana.

However, not all Disney parks experienced growth. Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World saw a slight decline of 5.5%, while Disney's Animal Kingdom also reported a minor decrease of 2.8%.

Universal Orlando

Universal Orlando faced a challenging year in 2023, with both Universal Studios Florida and Universal's Islands of Adventure experiencing declines in attendance. Universal Studios Florida saw a 9.3% decrease, and Islands of Adventure also reported a 9.3% drop. These declines were attributed to several factors, including the slower-than-expected return of international visitors and increased competition in the Orlando market. Despite these setbacks, Universal's investment in Epic Universe, set to open in 2025, is expected to rejuvenate the brand and draw significant attention in the coming years.

SeaWorld

SeaWorld Orlando also faced a slight decline in attendance, with a 2.5% decrease, bringing its total to 4.34 million visitors. Despite this, SeaWorld has continued to invest in new attractions, including new roller coasters and water slides, aiming to enhance the guest experience and drive future growth. The park's focus on unique experiences and animal conservation continues to be a central theme in its efforts to attract and retain visitors.

Water Parks in Orlando

Orlando’s water parks experienced mixed results in 2023. Universal’s Volcano Bay saw a slight decline in attendance, dropping by 2.7% to 1.8 million visitors. Similarly, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon experienced a minor decrease of 0.9%, with attendance just under 1.9 million.

I wouldn't call these major E-tickets anymore though. I know ST has high-capacity, but I don't think it pulls as many people as it once used to.

Nemo Subs and Star Tours, too

TrainsOfDisneyAug 19, 2024

They have Star tours over there as well. But yes, Tomorrowland needs work - ideally peoplemover comes back along with something for Magic Eye and Carousel of Progress.

I’ve been at WDW for New Years and 4th of July and I’ve been to DL for Christmas and 4th of July. They both handle crowds differently but if one wins out to me it’s DL. If you want a Disney park experience- Disneyland Resort is much better. But if you like the resort experience - WDW enters the conversation for sure.

Andrew25Aug 19, 2024

The entire eastern side of Disneyland & Magic Kingdom is ripe for capacity additions. Disneyland is loaded heavily onto just one side with 6 massive E-tickets, balanced by only Space Mountain & the Matterhorn on the other. It could use a decent amount of people eaters in the east.

DL’s “target max” hmmmm? Could be—- I’m not sure whatsoever. But theoretical annual max would be around 30 million……..assumes sardines for 365 days straight.

Yeah I think a lot are sort of hitting on my point. The rides can get someone there once. Maybe back every once in a while. But we are talking some big time prices. Something like cedar point or Carowinds can have people come back for just a big e ticket ride cause it costs $100 for the season. But if you are talking I need to drop $1000 for my family to spend a single day at a park, am I doing that multiple times a year just because the ride system is amazing? Or do you really need the crazy details and other things to get people wanting to come back? Or does either matter once it hits that kind of pricing? Honestly don't know the answer. It feels like Disney thinks the rides and individual lands matter a lot more than the overall park theming and extras. Universal seems like maybe they are starting to head more that way too? They could be correct, but it's an interesting thing to think about.

I hope you don’t mind but I’m going to use that line… probably frequently… with friends, possibly children, definitely coworkers! “Uhm… I’m sorry to say but you don’t seem to be overburdened by an abundance of wisdom”! That’s the greatest thing I’ve heard lately!

I don’t know how much sustained growth DL can have though, I actually just gave up on DL and went back to WDW (this has nothing to do with me moving from LA to the east coast teehee). But Disneyland is so much smaller and dense than MK, the crowds drove me insane. It reminded me of mid2010s MK sized crowds. Would be curious what DL’s theoretical capacity is

el_superAug 19, 2024

??? Seems likely that 17 million is just where their target max attendance is.

BuzzedPotatoHead89Aug 19, 2024

I think we just need to give it a bit more time and the “true king” will be revealed. Where they have the “blessing of sizable insights” to maintain/refresh RoA in addition to the largest collection of E-tickets in any castle park.

TalkToEthanAug 19, 2024

MK 17.72 million DL 17.25 million Since the playing field is not level I wonder if these numbers fairly reveal which is the true king.

GhostHost1000Aug 19, 2024

not unless they bring back the real AK draw of the past....kitetails 🙃

TalkToEthanAug 19, 2024

Agreed … frankly I’ve been most displeased with AK’s apparent lack of progress over the years I’m hoping Disney will double its efforts with this Encanto and IJ plan
